Dear Infrastructure and Sustainability team,
This is my first opportunity to say happy new year in writing. Thank you for coming out to our annual I&S luncheon on January 4 and congratulations to all of our deserving award winners.
2024 has started off with a bang for our leadership team; many of us just returned from the Extreme Ownership conference on leadership. We came back with some fresh leadership tools, energized and excited to lead I&S in advancing the campus common goal of student success in the coming year. Plus some of us participated in the optional 4:45 a.m. physical training (PT) each day; my arms are still recovering from all the pushups and burpees.
As Black History Month starts, I’ve been reflecting on our campus Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) philosophy. Advancing DEI at 911 is the responsibility of the entire campus community, including Infrastructure & Sustainability. Our collaborative work must form a solid foundation for all we do.
Thanks to our ISIEC committee for bringing two screenings of the film This Is (Not) Who We Are to our department in January. We had 90 attendees view the film and then participate in a Q&A with the filmmaker, Katrina Miller, and Chief Doreen Jokerst from CUPD. It is important for us to learn about the gaps that exist in our culture; this is how we can start to be more inclusive. If you missed the film, it will be this month.
We are open to ideas for other DEI events. Send your suggestions to ISIEC@colorado.edu.
Having grown up in Costa Rica I have close friends and family members from many different cultures, including native Costa Ricans, expatriates and Afro-Caribbeans. Because of this, I recognize the value of embracing all of our similarities while honoring our differences. This has shaped who I am today and why I feel so strongly about DEI on a personal level.
Thank you for participating in these important conversations. I look forward to having more in the future.
With gratitude,
Chris Ewing, vice chancellor for infrastructure and sustainability
